Before your trip:

Are your trips classes, workshops or tours, there’s so much out there being called different things, it’s kind of confusing.

The photography niche of the travel industry has grown exponentially over the last few years and along with it comes lots of different products being offered. Many people think a photo tour means getting dropped off on the side of the road to shoot without any instruction. We've developed travel styles that cater to different types of trips. Check each of our itineraries to see what's included and how the trip is run. With all of our trips, we have our standard Photo Nomads level of service. That means you'll always get instruction when we're shooting if you'd like it. It means you'll always have a professionally operated trip. It means you'll always have friendly, professional staff available to help you throughout the duration of your trip. You won't be left to shoot on your own unless you want to.

Do your trips include other experiences besides photography. What can I expect?

What is included varies between travel styles and individual itineraries. All of our trips prioritize photography, some of our trips include additional activities that add to the overall experience of your trip - but never at the expense of photo opportunities.

Who is leading the trips? Are they tour guides or professional photographers?

You'll always have staff that are expert photographers who can teach you new skills along the way. You'll also always have staff who are experts in the locations we're traveling to and who are experienced guides. You'll be well looked after on your journey!

Do you have a waiting list for trips after they are filled to capacity?

Yes we do. To be added to the waiting list, please email us and let us know which trip and which departure date you’d like to be added to. We’ll put you on the list and notify you if space becomes available.

Do I need to have a certain level of skill before I sign up for a trip?

Nope, we cater to all types of photographers from beginners to seasoned pros. We do however, recommend that you learn how to adjust certain settings on your camera prior to arrival. Our groups are small, so individual time with leaders is available, but learning some basics on how to adjust ISO, shutter speed and aperture will give you a good base before you come out. If there's a trip that's designed for experienced photographers there will be notifications on that itinerary about required experience levels.

Does the trip price include flights to get to and from the trip gateways?

Getting to and from the trip gateways is not included in the price of any of our trips. If you need help figuring out how to get to or from the start or end of a trip, please contact us, we’re happy to share our knowledge and help you find the best solution!

What’s included/not included on each trip?

The detailed list of inclusions for each itinerary can be found on that specific itinerary page. Some trips include everything, and others focus more on just the photo instruction. If you have any further questions please feel free to get in touch with us and we’ll happily answer any questions you have. We strive to make every part of your experience as enjoyable as possible!

Who will I be traveling with?

Photographers from all walks of life come and take our trips and everyone is always welcome! We've had guests in their 20's and guests in their 80's and many in-between! We've had guests that are new to photography and guests that are professional photographers. We’re ready for everyone, and want everyone to feel comfortable signing up.

Does Photo Nomads carry all the proper insurances, permits and certifications necessary to operate trips?

We sure do! We've got a lot of experience as a tour operator and we make sure we always operate above board, and operate with your safety being our top priority. We carry specialized tour operator insurance and always obtain any required permits and abide by permit rules and regulations.

Does the trip price include travel insurance?

Everyone has different needs when it comes to insurance so that’s something to purchase individually. However, we really strongly recommend that you purchase travel insurance when you book your trip, for some of our trips proof of insurance is required to travel. I’d like Photo Nomads to setup a custom itinerary or private trip for my group, is that possible?

Sure! We love to customize trips for private groups. Please email us ( or call us (+1-888-343-9595) and we'll chat about how we can best be of assistance to you.

I have a friend/spouse/partner that would like to come on the trip with me, but they aren’t a photographer. Is this possible?

Anyone is allowed to sign up for a trip, even if they are not a photographer. However, our trips are specifically designed for photography so as long as they are open to go along for the ride, we’re happy to have them. Who knows, they might get hooked on photography too! Typically, pricing for each person will be standard, whether any person chooses to take part or sit out of any photography training. Please email us or call us to see if we can offer alternate pricing for a non-photographer for the trip you're interested in.

How physically active are your trips? Do I have to be in good shape to do lots of hiking to get to great photo spots?

Each itinerary varies, but in general someone in average shape should have no trouble on any of our trips. Please see the individual trip page for more detailed information about the activity level of that trip. You can also always contact us directly if you have specific concerns.

After booking, before departure:

Do I get any type of documentation after I book?

You sure do! After booking you'll receive an email that has an electronic trip packet which includes information about your trip, getting to and from the trip gateways, packing advice and more! Please reach out to us if you don’t receive any documents or have more questions!

What should I bring with me on my trip?

Each itinerary page has a section that lists off suggested items to bring. Keep in mind, some items listed may be seasonal and might not be suggested year round. You’ll also get a more specific breakdown in your trip docs after you book. If you have questions about what to bring, or recommended gear, please reach out to us and we can help answer your questions.

How much luggage can I bring?

Space on the trips can sometimes be limited. We ask that you try to pack light, while still being prepared. You don't need to have a separate outfit for each day of the trip and laundry is usually available along the way. Certain trips may have size or weight restrictions for luggage, if you have questions please get in touch and we can help!

If I have any medical concerns or physical limitations should I let Photo Nomads know before my trip?

Yes; please advise us of any medical concerns or physical limitations that you have before your trip departs.

Does Photo Nomads provide any assistance in obtaining Visas or Passports?

Any required visas or passports must be individually obtained prior to travel. For requirements on visas and passports, please check with authorities in the locations in which you are traveling to. On some of our itineraries, such as our trips in Africa, we'll transit between countries and have to obtain visas upon entry. We will send out requirements for visas in your pre-trip information packets. We can help point you in the right direction at the borders but we cannot help guests obtain visas if they are denied by local government authorities.

On Your Trip:

What happens if we run into bad weather on a trip?

We keep calling Mother Nature to put in requests, but she hasn’t picked up the phone or called us back yet! Dramatic weather can often be great for photography. We put the safety of our passengers and leaders above all else. We’ll photograph in varying weather as long as it is safe to do so. The final call is up to the trip leaders. If we do miss out at a location because it is unsafe to shoot, we have other types of indoor style instruction that can take place instead. Don’t you worry - we have your back!

I don’t want to shoot at the same location as the rest of the group, can I go off on my own?

We make sure to choose awesome locations for our shoots, but we understand that different views speak to different people. Some photographers love vistas, others prefer intimate landscapes. We talk with our groups to find out what everyone is interested in and those interests factor into our decisions when choosing shooting locations. Often times we're bound by logistical issues such as permit regulations, transport, etc, so we allow for as much flexibility in your shooting that we possibly can while at the same time making sure we're always operating safely, professionally, and above board.

I need to keep all my goodies charged on the road, can I do that?

Yep, we do also recommend bringing extra batteries because we’ll be taking A LOT of photos! Each night you’ll have a chance to charge up at your hotel, sometimes our vehicles will have charging options available as well! For some of our adventure trips that are off the beaten path, you might want to invest in a charging system that will allow you to power up out in nature. Our friends at offer a range of products that can help keep your gear charged when outlets aren't an option.

If I have special dietary requirements, can you find me certain foods?

We do everything we can to cater to food allergies and dietary restrictions. Luckily, restaurants In North America & around the world are getting much better at catering to dietary needs and we find that our clients aren't having issues in finding food that works for them while traveling.

Will I be able to do laundry while traveling?

In most cases, yes. Our trips run at a fast pace to make sure we include as much as possible for you. Laundry will be available at most destinations and hotels, so it’s up to you to find the time to take care of it. Our leaders will always advise on the best places for laundry.

Do your leaders spend time taking their own photos on the trips?

For us, it's very simple when it comes to photography trips: our guests always come first! Once our guests are setup and happily snapping away our staff can then setup and shoot as well. If our staff are shooting and guests have questions, those questions always take priority no matter how amazing the light is.

How many people will be on the trip? How many trip leaders are there?

Most of our trips have a cap of 12 people. We do have some trips that have smaller caps at 6 or 8. We always provide enough staff members to make sure all of our guests are taken care of on the trip.

What if I arrive late and miss part of my trip?

Get in touch with us as soon as you find out you’re not going to be able to make the start of your trip. We’ll do everything we can to get you caught up ASAP. We unfortunately cannot offer any refunds if you arrive late and miss any section of your trip. We highly recommend purchasing travel insurance to cover yourself in the event something like this happens.

Do I need to provide tips or gratuities while on your trips?

This is entirely up to your discretion. Typically, the people you would tip on your trip are your driver, local guides, local staff, etc. We'll provide information on tipping in your pre-trip documentation and also go over this information again during your trip orientation meeting.

What are the accommodations like when we’re on the road?

Each of our trips is different but our ultimate goal is to utilize the right blend of comfort, location and quality. Our guests have always been happy with our accommodation on our trips, and in certain places like Africa we stay at some pretty special locations.If you have questions about what type of accommodations your trip will have, please get in touch with us!
